I don't want a game to show me all its numbers and such, I just want to get the feel of the game's concept. It only leads to easier-to-understand gameplay and less number crunching, which - to me - is a real deal-breaker.

That may sound like it's worse, but trust me, it's not. If you haven't played it, (you should if you like dungeons or crawling through them), it's sorta like Crawl, except there's no classes, no stats, less monsters, and simpler dungeon design. He was very lucky to find an awesome orcish glaive of speed from a random orc warrior, and is doing really well with polearms, dodge, enchantments and stealth.ĭungeon Crawl is cool and such, but it will never win over the game that inspired it ROGUE. He's still alive having done the Lair, the Hive and the Swamp and just got the Decaying Rune. My current best effort so far is a lvl 17 merfolk crusader. Some good starting characters IMO are dwarf fighters, merfolk crusaders, spriggan stalkers, or deep elf wizards (with the fire book). But it's best to focus on a few skills than to try and learn all of them. Your class determines only your starting stats and starting gear and nothing more, and any race or character can learn any skill just by using it. Be very cautious around ogres, trolls, unique named people (especially Sigmund), centaurs, orc warriors and groups of gnolls.ĥ) When choosing a character class, your race determines how well you learn each skill. You can't sell stuff so don't bother lugging around things you won't use. Keep weapons and armor with descriptions like glowing or runed that you might want to use and identify them by using them once you have detect curse or remove curse scrolls to hand (in case they are cursed). Make sure to grab all the unidentified scrolls and potions you can find, and once you have a bunch of them it's pretty safe to identify them by using them as long as there are no monsters around (the descriptions are randomised and don't mean anything).

It's also easy to get into the mindset that you'll save your consumables (potions, scrolls, wands) for later if you do that, most of the time there will be no later because you got killed because you didn't use your stuff, and the rest of the time you'll end up stashing consumables away because you ended up with tons of it anyway.Ĥ) Your early game goal is to survive long enough to reach the ecumenical temple where you can pick a god to worship, unless your class started with one. It makes so much difference to just stop for a few seconds and take a look at your wands scrolls and potions instead of charging in.ģ) Use your stuff. Where will you fight it? What abilities and potions can you use? How will you get away if things go tits up and it's stronger than you thought? Don't rush in a difficult situation the game is turn based so you have all the time in the world to think. Can you avoid it until you're stronger? That's probably the best policy. If you see something that looks dangerous, stop and think. In dungeon crawl, that attitude will get you killed over and over. It's easy to get into the mindset from other games that you can just run in and kill everything and either probably not die or at worst just reload. Avoid putting yourself in a position where you risk dying.Ģ) Play smart. Never forget that the main goal of the game is to not die. It deletes your save game, you start over. Not much else has managed to pack in so much thought, tension and elation into a game.ġ) Don't die. I'd say this is the most compelling and engaging of all the games I've played recently, more than any flashy AAA title, so if you're feeling a little sick of that kind of thing, here's something completely different. I highly recommend it, it's free, it's under 4mb and anyone can run it. Just got into playing Dungeon Crawl, and it's fantastic.
